We are seeking an experienced, talented, and energetic Seventh and Eighth Grade Spanish Teacher for the 2022-2023 school year. This position reports to the middle school director and works in close collaboration with our 5/6 Spanish Teacher.  Core responsibilities include, teaching two sections of 7th grade Spanish and two sections of 8th grade Spanish, serving as an advisor to ten to twelve  7th or 8th grade students, and engaging in collaborative work with the 7/8 faculty to develop curriculum and build an inclusive culture in the middle school.. The ideal candidate will bring middle school and subject matter expertise, cultural competence and commitment to equity and inclusion work, and alignment with the CDS Learning Beliefs. The successful candidate will prepare and inspire all students to be lifelong learners of Spanish, emphasizing conversation and project-based learning. Children’s Day School uses the Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling method of instruction.

    • Enthusiasm for the opportunities and challenges inherent in working with middle school students
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with students, colleagues and parents
    • Willingness to model professional and ethical standards when working with students and the 7/8 Team
    • The desire and ability to contribute to student and community life inside and outside the classroom 
  • Writing narrative reports for all students
  • Maintaining a positive partnership with parents
  • Participating in parent/teacher conferences
  • A commitment to professional development 
  • A commitment to social justice and multicultural education
  • Curricular content and instruction 
    • Fluent in Spanish 
    • Willingness to include instruction with an equal balance of conversational skills, language acquisition, and applications in the world beyond the classroom 
    • Ability and willingness to differentiate instruction
    • Ability to integrate theory with practice in designing and implementing appropriate learning strategies for each student 
  • Other responsibilities include: 
    • Being an advisor of 10-12 students (prior training in Responsive Classroom is desired but not necessary)
    • Leading or co-leading an affinity group related to race/ethnicity, family structure, gender, religion, sexual orientation or other aspects of identity
    • Participating in an overnight environmental education trip
    • Performing lunch, recess, morning, and dismissal duties as assigned
  • Minimum Requirements 
    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; academic program focus in Spanish and/or education-related fields 
    • Two or more years experience working with middle school students
    • Teaching credential and/or master’s degree preferred
