 We are seeking an experienced, talented, and energetic Middle School Associate Teacher and SEL Program Assistant for the 2022-2023 school year. This position reports to the middle school director and works in close collaboration with our School Counselor and SEL Program Director. Core responsibilities include working with students in the case of teacher absences and engaging in collaborative work while implementing SEL programming and building an inclusive culture in the middle school. The ideal candidate will bring middle school expertise, cultural competence and commitment to equity and inclusion work, and alignment with the CDS Learning Beliefs


  • During the school year, the daily schedule is mostly 8:00am - 4:30pm Monday – Friday (hours may vary slightly for meetings). The school year starts on August 15th.
  • This position starts the week of August 15th and through the duration of the school year
    • The first two weeks require availability for school year prep
  • Potential for full-time employment during the summer program and vacation camps.


General Middle School Support: 

  • In classrooms, implement and teach lesson plans in the event of teacher absences (on-call substitute). Manage classroom behavior and productivity. Outside the classroom, you might be asked to support in various roles, namely the front desk receptionist. Throughout all responsibilities, you will act as a role model by demonstrating a learner's stance to help students engage with their learning.
  • Supervise and engage with snack time, lunch supervision, free play, and program transitions.
  • Provide a safe physical and emotional environment for all students. Encourage children to take initiative to solve problems. Help children think, investigate, ask questions and laugh. Strive to meet each child’s individual needs.

Social-Emotional Learning Support: 

  • Observe, plan, and implement exciting, student-centered social-emotional learning experiences for students throughout the school year ranging from mindfulness to conflict resolution to reflection to small group advisory support.
  • Collaborate, inspire, support, problem-solve and communicate with MS Student Wellness team members (School Counselor, Learning Support Specialist, MS Program Director) and the school day teachers.
  • Collaborate with families toward their child’s success.
  • Attend meetings as a middle school staff/team member

Educational Requirements and Desired Skills

  • At least an associate’s degree (AA) or equivalent credit.
  • Experience teaching or leading youth activities and excellent classroom management.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as well as a great sense of humor.
  • Demonstrate the ability to take initiative, work passionately and joyfully, and collaborate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents.
  • Express the desire and ability to take on increasing responsibility in the classroom and the CDS community, and to participate generously.
  • Strong commitment to building a learning community where the people, culture, and curriculum reflect the racial, ethnic, economic, and family diversity of San Francisco.
  • Possess dynamic problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Be proficient in technology: email, word processing, photos, etc.


Benchmarked on our Associate Teacher Salary Schedule depending on education and experience, plus benefits offered including medical, dental, and vision, and a retirement plan. 35-40 hours/week.
